“A California supermarket desperate to slow the constant shoplifting that has plagued parts of the state has installed giant metal barriers at exits to stop the thefts.
A Safeway in Vallejo recently added metal emergency exit gates in front of one of the entrances that warn an 'alarm will sound' if thieves try to leave the building.
CBS reporter Betty Yu also said the Vallejo store closed a second entrance and other locations are following suit to deter thieves from stealing.
Some Safeway locations installed exit bars months ago, as one shopper took to Twitter to show one store going to the extreme, blocking off closed checkout lanes with large metal gates, as well as lining pathways leading out of the store with obstructions as well.
'Bars everywhere, multiple security guards, you have to scan your receipt for the gate to open in order to exit, and if you don't buy anything an employee has to open the gate to let you out,' a Twitter user remarked in February about an Oakland Safeway store. DailyMail.com has reached out to Safeway for comment.
“For the first time, US regulators on Wednesday approved the sale of chicken made from animal cells, allowing two California companies to offer ‘lab-grown’ meat to the nation’s restaurant tables and eventually, supermarket shelves.
The Agriculture Department gave the green light to Upside Foods and Good Meat, firms that had been racing to be the first in the US to sell meat that doesn’t come from slaughtered animals — what’s now being referred to as ‘cell-cultivated’ or ‘cultured’ meat as it emerges from the laboratory and arrives on dinner plates.
The move launches a new era of meat production aimed at eliminating harm to animals and drastically reducing the environmental impacts of grazing, growing feed for animals, and animal waste.
‘Instead of all of that land and all of that water that’s used to feed all of these animals that are slaughtered, we can do it in a different way,’ said Josh Tetrick, co-founder, and chief executive of Eat Just, which operates Good Meat.
The action came months after the Food and Drug Administration deemed that products from both companies are safe to eat. A manufacturing company called Joinn Biologics, which works with Good Meat, was also cleared to make the products.
Cultivated meat is grown in steel tanks, using cells that come from a living animal, a fertilized egg, or a special bank of stored cells. In Upside’s case, it comes out in large sheets that are then formed into shapes like chicken cutlets and sausages.”
“Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Wednesday affirmed that more interest rate increases are likely ahead until additional progress is made on bringing down inflation.
Speaking a week after Federal Open Market Committee officials decided for the first time in more than a year not to push rates higher, the central bank leader indicated that the move likely was just a brief respite rather than an indication that the Fed is done hiking.
‘Nearly all FOMC participants expect that it will be appropriate to raise interest rates somewhat further by the end of the year,’ Powell said in prepared remarks for testimony he will deliver to the House Financial Services Committee.

“It’s The Economy Stupid Wednesday,” Ripped From The Headlines. Things To Ponder:
“Everything IS JUST FINE… We’re Just Going To Put Up These Anti-Theft Bars…”
You keep hearing that everything is fine…
The economy, public safety, the banking system…
But then, a story like the one where grocery stores in Northern California are locking ALL ITEMS up, putting up metal anti-theft bars, and making you scan your receipts before you can leave the store comes out…
Sounds SUPER safe!
This quote from a customer at a Safeway store in Oakland, CA, really sums it up:
“Bars everywhere, multiple security guards, you have to scan your receipt for the gate to open in order to exit, and if you don't buy anything an employee has to open the gate to let you out.”
The way things are going, if this hasn’t already started to happen around you, it’s coming.
Brace For Impact.
“It’s Real Meat… It’s Just Grown In A Lab… Try It!”
That’s a no for us…
There’s something really odd with lab-grown meat… and we’re not alone in thinking that way:
Chen acknowledged that many consumers are skeptical, even squeamish, about the thought of eating chicken grown from cells.
“We call it the ‘ick factor,’” she said.
The sentiment was echoed in a recent poll conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Half of US adults said that they are unlikely to try meat grown using cells from animals.
When asked to choose from a list of reasons for their reluctance, most who said they’d be unlikely to try it said “it just sounds weird.” About half said they don’t think it would be safe.
There’s also an economic factor in play here. This “meat” is significantly more expensive to produce…
And, it’s the FDA… which has a track record of approving… um… really bad things.
Given the way things are going right now, a concern in the future is something like this becomes a way to control meat consumption, if the government decides one day that “lab-grown” is the only way forward…
Guess what? NO MEAT FOR YOU!
This is a sign that you need to keep an eye on the people, and the agencies, that serve you… to make sure they aren’t serving themselves.

So, that inflation thing…
The chair of the Federal Reserve still can’t quite get it worked out…
He’s saying they will raise rates again and that you, average Joe or Jane, are pretty much screwed.
Here’s the sad irony: Powell is consistent in his magical failing ability.
From the December 15, 2022 edition of Ripped From The Headlines:
“We don't talk about this kind of recession, that kind of a recession. We just make these forecasts," Powell said in a news conference. ‘I wish there were a completely painless way to restore price stability. There isn't, and this is the best we can do.'"
This is the guy that seems hell-bent on killing your wealth…
