“Washington will establish a nonpolice hotline to assist people who have been targeted by hate crimes and bias incidents, state lawmakers decided this week, passing a new version of a bill that failed to advance last year.
Senate Bill 5427, sponsored by Sen. Javier Valdez, D-Seattle, among others, directs the state Attorney General’s Office to create a hotline serving at least three Washington counties by 2025 and all counties by 2027.
The bill says the hotline should be staffed during business hours. It says call takers should provide victims with information, refer them to culturally competent, trauma-informed local service providers for additional help and document the calls for annual reports. Identifying information will be kept out of the reports and will be exempt from public disclosure requests.
SB 5427 passed the Senate on Feb. 7 and cleared the House on Wednesday, drawing unanimous support from Democrats and near-unanimous opposition from Republicans. It’s now headed to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk to be signed into law.
Under Washington law, hate crimes are actions in which a perpetrator maliciously and intentionally causes physical injury or damage because of a victim’s race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, or disability. Established as a category in Washington in 2019, hate crimes also include hate-related threats that cause a victim to reasonably fear harm. They’re felony offenses punishable by up to five years in prison.”
THINGS TO PONDER:
Vague language is going to lead to big trouble in Washington… and beyond.
As we’ve mentioned in previous editions of Ripped From The Headlines, in a world where you have no idea of what you are going to say, write, or do next is going to be deemed ”hate speech,” freedom of speech, or expression, or the right to defend yourself… is dead.
This isn’t a racial or political issue… it's about those who make and enforce the law.
And that’s why this is particularly scary:
Established as a category in Washington in 2019, hate crimes also include hate-related threats that cause a victim to reasonably fear harm. They’re felony offenses punishable by up to five years in prison.
You basically have no idea what’s going to be a crime… or how you’ll be dealt with… And Washington isn’t the only place where you’re going to see this happen…
Unless you pay attention and call it out.

“A $16 bacon cheeseburger may not be enough to save your neighborhood bar and grill.
Independent restaurants are on financial life support, owners say, squeezed between escalating payroll costs and diners’ dwindling tolerance for ever-higher checks. Wages for waitstaff, table bussers and line cooks will grow more expensive for many eateries this year, with 22 states in January raising the minimum wage for hourly workers.
The industry’s economic strains can be seen on the appetizer plate at Chef Zorba’s Restaurant in Denver. Owner Karen LuKanic recently swapped Greek giant beans for homemade stuffed grape leaves to save money, and switched to cheaper shoestring potatoes from thick-cut fries. Denver has increased its minimum wage annually since 2020, most recently in January to $18.29 an hour, while Colorado has expanded paid sick leave and other employee benefit requirements.
‘We are just keeping our head above water,’ said LuKanic, who estimated about half her restaurant’s sales now go to payroll and other employee-related costs.
Chef Zorba’s charges $15.75 for a bacon cheeseburger, $5 more than in 2018. Even at those prices the 78-seat restaurant can’t turn a profit. LuKanic said she would consider closing if her Small Business Administration loan wasn’t guaranteed by her house.
American restaurants emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic to find their traditional economics no longer work. After struggling to stay afloat through lockdowns, restaurant operators endured surging food costs and supply chain shortages. Restaurateurs raised menu prices. In January, prices for food eaten away from home were up 30% compared with the same month in 2019, Labor Department data showed.
Restaurants’ food bills have stopped their pandemic-era surge. But payroll costs are still climbing.“
THINGS TO PONDER:
Those food bills “haven’t stopped their pandemic-era surge…”
That’s to make you feel better and soften the blow about the “strong economy…”
You’re reading yet another story about small to mid-sized businesses who aren’t going to make it…
While big guys are still getting breaks.
Just like during the COVID shutdown sham…
Notice how difficult it is to afford things?
How does that work in a “strong economy” again?
That’s the right question.

“On Sunday night, Congressional negotiators revealed a bill which will fund key parts of the government through the rest of the fiscal year which began in October.
The 1,050-page legislation sets a discretionary spending level of $1.66 trillion for FY24, which comes just days after lawmakers passed the fourth stopgap measure since Oct. 1 to keep the government funded a bit longer.
According to Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer's office, the bill ‘maintains the aggressive investments Democrats secured for American families, American workers, and America’s national defense.’
House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement that ‘House Republicans secured key conservative policy victories, rejected left-wing proposals, and imposed sharp cuts to agencies and programs critical to the President Biden’s agenda.’
But what neither of them mention is that the bill also nukes the entire Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve - which, at roughly 1 million barrels, is too small to matter on a national scale - but which could serve as a critical cache of energy in the event of another major disaster.
The Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve was established in 2014 following Hurricane Sandy, which cut through refineries and fuel terminals resulting in fuel shortages in some parts of the northeast. The rationale for draining it is that it "does not have the operational functionality that was envisioned post-Sandy," former President Trump said of the supply in 2017.
What's more, once the reserve is drained, the bill mandates that the entire thing will be shut down.”
THINGS TO PONDER:
Well, this is an issue…
How is it that in stealing more of your hard-earned money to keep grifting, your public servants… that you’ve sent to serve your interests… have managed to slip in a provision that kills gas reserves?
That’s the right question.
We just want to point out for the record that this is happening… right in front of you… and none of those public servants is doing anything to stop it.
Let that sink in…
Also, remember that every seat in the US Congress is up for renewal.

Issues with critters? Sick of using things that can easily make you sick or kill you?
Dr. Killigan’s is THE all-natural solution. Check out what a customer had to say about their “Six Feet Under” non-toxic insect spray:
I bought this to get rid of the ants that built a nest in my flagstone patio and sidewalk. I have granddaughters and pets, and I didn't want to use chemicals that could make them sick if they were exposed. I've used other natural pesticides in the past with mild success but this stuff definitely does the trick! I've only had to spray one time over a month ago...still no sign of the ants returning. 10/10, will be purchasing more.”
