SPECIAL EDITION: FLORIDA’S STRANGE FRUIT
(Editor’s Note: Today, we’ll be taking a look at the significant contrasts in Florida with Governor Ron DeSantis)
For many, Florida is considered the “free state of Florida.”
Wide open during the COVID-19 lockdowns, free from woke-ism, and a leader in election integrity.
But with every story, there are two sides… and the devil is in the details.
Let’s take a look at two power moves and the legislation that’s giving people pause.
Power Moves
Recently, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the “Heartbeat Bill” into law, which prohibits abortions once the unborn child has a detectible heartbeat.
He also signed bipartisan legislation that would permit the death penalty for those convicted of sexually abusing children:
“My view is, you have some of these people that will be serial rapists of six, seven-year-old kids,” DeSantis told “Good Morning Orlando” Monday. “I think the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment when you have situations like that.”
Strong positions, which are great things.
Then comes the strange fruit.
You need to be prepared… there’s just too much crazy stuff happening.
We’ve found the 4Patriots solar generators to be light and easy to use. Plus, they are quiet and don’t require fuel.
You’re able to power key things like your fridge, freezer, coffee maker, and more.
The Flipside: SB7050, “Resign To Run,” & Voting Integrity
A hot-button issue in the state today is SB7050.
On the surface, this bill would appear to strengthen voting integrity, but the language is quite confusing.
It includes language that would allow a “carve out” exemption for Florida’s Resign To Run law, which states that if the Governor chooses to run for President, he would need to step down from the office of Governor within 10 days.
Looking under the hood of this bill, here is a quick list of what would happen if the bill is signed into law:
Eliminate signature verification for “vote by mail” ballots;
Allow 3rd party Non-Governmental Organizations (“NGOs”) to register new voters;
Limit who each county Supervisor of Elections could engage or share information with, which would effectively limit grassroots organizations for making information requests or investigating issues with voting integrity;
Allow for bypassing Florida’s “Resign To Run” statute. From the Hernando Sun:
According to CS/SB7050, which was introduced on April 11 by Senator Travis Hutson (R-St. Augustine), “Any person seeking the office of President or Vice President of the United States is not subject to the requirements of chapter 99, 1371 Florida Statutes, which govern candidate qualifying…”
Under Chapter 99, 1371 of Florida Statutes, “No officer may qualify as a candidate for another state, district, county, or municipal public office if the terms or any part thereof run concurrently with each other without resigning from the office he or she presently holds.”
These items have caused confusion including amongst grassroots conservative leaders who have spent significant time exposing voting irregularities.
Florida Republican Assembly Executive Vice President, Lou Marin, was on the American Adversaries Radio Show in Orlando yesterday discussing SB 7050, and the potential issues with it, including Governor DeSantis running for President versus working as Governor:
The Lee County Republican Executive Committee also provided a resolution calling out issues with SB7050:
Regarding HB543, Governor DeSantis has stated that he would welcome true Constitutional carry legislation if it got to his desk.
But he has provided no comment on the concerns regarding SB7050 or whether he would veto the bill.
Regarding SB7050, Ripped From The Headlines has heard disturbing information from sources, saying that those who actually understand and are against SB7050 are being told that they need to “fall in line, or they won’t see another term in the State House or Senate.”
Is that the behavior of a conservative super majority?
Here’s the vote tally for SB7050, per the Miami Independent:
Trend Or Not?
Given these recent developments, we’re left to wonder if this type of strange fruit becomes a trend.
We saw odd behavior from legislators earlier this year, with FL State Senator Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) introducing SB 1316, a bill that would require bloggers to register with state offices if they make any profit from their posts about elected officials in the state.
A bill like this one would force a publication like ours into a box - if we wanted to write a critical piece on an elected official and we had sponsors, we would have to register. Historically, this is dangerous, as actions like this have led to journalists giving up their sources, or being detained when rights are suspended.
Summing It Up
While we can’t be certain about what happens moving forward, situations like these should do two very important things:
Give us pause;
Keep us vigilant.
We must stay on top of those who we’ve tasked to represent us and hold them accountable, regardless of who it is.
