“The residential real estate market has screeched to a halt, and some economists believe home prices are about to drop significantly.
The big picture: Existing home sales have fallen for nine straight months. The supply of single-family homes is growing. And with mortgage rates near 7%, experts say a large-scale housing slowdown is becoming increasingly likely.
What they're saying: "In one line: Collapse in prices is coming," wrote Kieran Clancy, senior U.S. economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.
Pantheon estimates that existing home prices will keep falling, ultimately dropping by about 20% from their June peak of around $414,000.
Goldman Sachs analysts also recently cut their outlook for home prices, from roughly flat next year to down 4%, noting that "unsustainable levels of housing affordability to continue weighing on housing demand."
Between the lines: Until recently, economists had pooh-poohed the prospect of a nationwide price slump, suggesting that persistently low inventories of houses to buy would put something of a floor under the market.”
“‘No path’ forward: Biden calls on Congress to avert rail strike”
“President Joe Biden on Monday asked Congress to intervene to prevent an economically crippling freight rail strike, even though it means delivering a defeat to his allies in the labor movement.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi immediately announced she will call a vote this week to carry out Biden’s request, which will mean that paid sick leave for the 115,000 workers involved in negotiations won’t be included in the deal.
Biden had held out for months on seeking congressional action, instead opting to give the freight rail industry and 12 of its unions more time to negotiate a contract. But as warnings mounted that a strike could begin as soon as Dec. 9, threatening to interrupt U.S. power and water supplies and devastate the broader economy, the pro-labor, pro-rail president said Monday that he saw ‘no path to resolve the dispute at the bargaining table.’
The development came two months after Labor Secretary Marty Walsh held an all-night bargaining session at his agency’s headquarters that produced a tentative deal, temporarily defusing the strike threat. But since then, members of three of the 12 unions voted to reject the agreement.
On Monday, Biden asked that Congress act ‘without any modifications or delay’ to impose the September settlement.”
“Google and YouTube are announcing a $13.2 million grant for the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to launch a new Global Fact Check Fund to support their network of 135 fact-checking organizations from 65 countries covering over 80 languages.”
“Building on our previous work to address misinformation, this is Google and YouTube’s single largest grant in fact-checking.
As part of Google’s commitment to fight disinformation in Central and Eastern Europe, we're also supporting civil society and research efforts. Google.org is providing $2.5M in grant funding to TechSoup Europe to launch an accelerator fund and will help NGOs fight against disinformation, along with another grant supporting Demagog (EDITOR’S NOTE: Really, Demagog? Why not just say you’re a dictator?) in building its fact checking ecosystem across the region. Additionally, IPSOS recently published research on the extent to which people are exposed to disinformation in the region. The research is the first of a series of projects conducted in cooperation with the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO), a research and monitoring hub within Charles University, and supported by Google.
YouTube has launched a media literacy initiative, “Hit Pause,” to help people assess the content they watch and share by providing tips on identifying different manipulation tactics used to spread misinformation. This will roll out across Europe in the coming months. YouTube also raises up authoritative sources in search results and recommendations, and connects people with information panels for certain topics prone to misinformation that point people to third-party sources for additional context.”
Ripped From The Headlines, “Useless Totalitarians Edition” - Things To Ponder:
Housing prices… ouch.
This article tries to paint a rosy picture, basically saying, “well, it won’t be like 2008 because unemployment is so low.”
It appears our friends at Axios missed the memo at Amazon, and also at this manufacturer who is doing mass layoffs and closing down.
Don’t fall for the “oh, this won’t happen to the entire economy” thing…
It’s. Already. Happening.
The Rail Strike…
Yep, the one talking heads (including the guy in the WHITE HOUSE) said was all fixed a while back.
Crazy Uncle Joe was out of bullets, so he had to ask Congress for help.
For clarity… THAT MEANS IT’S REALLY BAD.
We’re praying for resolution, because the alternative is bad for everyone.
Google… and YouTube… Jesus!
Question - how many dystopian future references can you throw into one announcement?
Answer: AS MANY AS GOOGLE AND YOUTUBE WANT, PEASANT!!!
If the big money for the fact checking network that will make its way here sooner than later wasn’t enough, check out their "Info Interventions" https://interventions.withgoogle.com/
It will scare you.
What Does This Mean?
The economy Your future is hanging the balance… literally.
Home prices having issues… intervention to stop a strike that would cripple the nation… and big tech making its move to “help the people.”
You’ll be less wealthy, with less supplies, and less free to speak your mind.
Those aren’t good things.
Why Should I Care?

Do you know why Berkshire Hathaway’s stock is so expensive?
They touch 90% of your life everyday, and you don’t even realize it. That’s inflation/deflation/recession/depression insurance. You’ll still need toilet paper and toothpaste.
You should also tell as many people as you can about what’s happening. Don’t leave people behind, while we still have a window to help them.
Quick way to do that: Share this newsletter… heck, take from it and do your own. We give you permission…
