“America’s electric-vehicle drivers are increasingly unhappy with public charging, as problems that include glitchy or inoperable equipment seem to be getting worse, not better.
Now the U.S. government plans to launch a $100 million effort to try to tackle the reliability issue and make public charging less annoying and more consistent. The funding aims to repair and replace thousands of old or out-of-commission chargers that are contributing to a roll-of-the-dice sensation among EV drivers, who never know what they might find.
Around one in five attempts at charging at a public station outside of the Tesla network is a bust, according to an August study from J.D. Power.
‘Imagine what it would be like if you couldn’t be sure when you pulled into a gas station that you’d actually get gas out of it,’ said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in an interview.
‘This is about making sure that access to charging is as reliable as access to fuel is today for gas cars, and we know that that’s not just a question of quantity but also one of quality,’ he said.
The money, which comes out of funding approved in 2021’s bipartisan infrastructure bill, will target more than 6,000 existing chargers that are classified as “temporarily unavailable” in a widely used government database that tracks public charger installations. Reasons that chargers might be reported as unavailable could include things such as power issues, damage from vandalism or routine maintenance.
There are around 150,000 public charging ports available to drivers, according to government data. Most charge cars over a period of hours, but around 34,000 are fast chargers that can do the job in 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the equipment and how fast the car battery can charge.
THINGS TO PONDER:
This is what happens when the cart gets WAY TOO FAR in front of the horse…
The government is in such a hurry to hit “sustainable goals” that it’s forgotten about actually sustaining what’s in place.
And let’s be honest: Are you really ready to go all in on electric when the nations’ power grids fall over when someone sneezes?
Probably not.
And, with the government in charge, you can be sure of one thing: It will be a long time before it’s anywhere near being right.

“US inflation rose in August by the most in over a year as a pickup in prices at the gas pump exacerbated already strained household budgets.
The consumer price index increased 0.6% from the prior month, the most since inflation peaked at a four-decade high in June 2022. Gasoline costs accounted for over half of the advance, according to the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Americans also saw higher prices for essentials like car insurance and prescription drugs.
Even when stripping out energy and food prices, the so-called core CPI accelerated on a monthly basis for the first time since February. Federal Reserve officials are more attuned to this measure, and the pickup likely leaves the door open to another interest-rate hike this year.
The figures reinforce the financial stress that American families have been dealing with for over a year. While prices aren’t rising as quickly as they were in 2022, just about everything costs more than it used to and purchasing power is losing steam.
Even though workers are finally starting to see their wage gains outpace price growth, the difference is narrowing. Inflation-adjusted pay rose 0.5% from a year earlier, marking a second month of decelerating earnings growth, a separate report showed Wednesday.
That makes the pain of the cost-of-living crisis that much worse. Energy costs rose broadly — including a 10.6% monthly increase in gasoline prices, which was the largest since March of last year. Utility costs increased as well.

“As the World Health Organization raised questions this summer about the risks of a popular artificial sweetener, a new hashtag began spreading on the social media accounts of health professionals: #safetyofaspartame.
Steph Grasso, a registered dietitian from Oakton, Va., used the hashtag and told her 2.2 million followers on TikTok that the WHO warnings about artificial sweeteners were “clickbait” based on ‘low-quality science.’
Another dietitian, Cara Harbstreet of Kansas City, reassured her Instagram followers not to worry about ‘fear-mongering headlines’ about aspartame because ‘the evidence doesn’t suggest there’s a reason for concern.’
In a third video, Mary Ellen Phipps, a Houston-area dietitian who specializes in diabetes care, sipped from a glass of soda and told her Instagram viewers that artificial sweeteners ‘satisfy the desire for sweetness’ without affecting blood sugar or insulin levels.
What these dietitians didn’t make clear was that they were paid to post the videos by American Beverage, a trade and lobbying group representing Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and other companies.
The campaign, which the beverage group acknowledged organizing, highlighted a little-known tactic the multibillion-dollar food and beverage industry is using to sway consumers faced with often-contradictory health messages about popular products.
The food, beverage and dietary supplement industries are paying dozens of registered dietitians that collectively have millions of social media followers to help sell products and deliver industry-friendly messages on Instagram and TikTok, according to an analysis by The Washington Post and The Examination, a new nonprofit newsroom specializing in global public health reporting.”
