“US retailers will hire the lowest number of seasonal workers for this holiday season since the final quarter of 2008, due to increased labor costs and shaky consumer confidence, according to a report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas shared exclusively with Reuters.
Retailers are expected to add just 410,000 seasonal jobs this season, according to an analysis of nonseasonally adjusted data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) by the global outplacement and executive coaching firm. That is just slightly above the 324,900 workers they added during the last quarter of the financial recession of 2008.
The hesitancy in hiring stems from consumers keeping a tight hold on spending and as retailers struggle to pass on rising costs of labor at a time when inflation is ebbing, said Andrew Challenger, senior vice president at the firm, which tracks government data and hiring trends.
‘Seasonal employers have a few issues to grapple with in the coming months. One is the cost of labor limiting desire to add workers. Another is whether consumers continue to spend at the same clip. Another is one that has been fairly constant since the pandemic: can they attract workers?”’Challenger said.
Signs are already emerging that the labor market is starting to cool and employers are hiring at a slower clip.”
THINGS TO PONDER:
It’s going to be a bumpy holiday season…
As we’ve covered in Ripped From The Headlines, many Americans can’t afford to live…
This means it’s harder to afford extras, so they buy less…
Which means retailers don’t sell as much and need fewer people…
That’s a vicious cycle.
As we get to the end of the cycle of the “COVID cushion” we’re going to see all of the parts of our economic systems that we’re working well exposed…
ALL AT THE SAME TIME. THAT AIN’T GOOD.
Brace For Impact.

“The case against Dijon Dixon, accused of killing Cornelius Smith in 2019, looked to be falling apart after a key witness backed out following an online death threat.
Then prosecutors presented the defense team with a detailed and dramatic timeline featuring some of Dixon’s social-media posts—including one in which the serial numbers of the Glock he was holding were partially visible.
Dixon took a plea deal.
The timeline was assembled by a team of people who once tracked international terrorists online and now are working for first-term New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams. The newly created task force is working to use machine-learning to autogenerate subpoenas for social-media and wireless companies, analyze the reams of data obtained and create vivid, detail-packed timelines.
Williams hired the team of 11 to take a 21st-century approach to tackling a surge in violent crime, exacerbated by an understaffed police department and an enormous backlog of cases.
The arrangement, which hasn’t previously been publicly announced, is unusual for U.S. law enforcement. Legal experts say the harnessing of such data to help prosecute crimes shouldn’t run afoul of constitutional protections, although one said it could prompt privacy concerns from the public. A group tracking the New Orleans crime problem raised concerns about outsourcing the state’s investigative authority to a private company.”
THINGS TO PONDER:
The weight of “catching the bad guy” vs. freedom is heavy…
This all sounds great…
Until you ask the question: Who watches the watchers?
What we shared recently from New York City around this topic is very relevant:
It appears that the solution to bad leadership… is a surveillance state.
How fitting for NYC, right?
Eric Adams puts the cherry on the sundae of turning NYC into a modern “Escape From New York” movie, and the best that he can come up with is the endless potential of drones…
To be in every facet of your private business.
Oh… you thought it was just going to be for Labor Day parties?
Here’s what Adams has been up to:
Like many cities, New York is increasingly relying on drones for policing purposes. Data maintained by the city shows the police department has used drones for public safety or emergency purposes 124 times this year, up from just four times in all of 2022. They were spotted in the skies after a parking garage collapse earlier this year and when a giveaway event devolved into teenage mayhem.

“Doctors say they're finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish Covid from allergies or the common cold, even as hospitalizations tick up.
The illness' past hallmarks, such as a dry cough or the loss of sense of taste or smell, have become less common. Instead, doctors are observing milder disease, mostly concentrated in the upper respiratory tract.
‘It isn’t the same typical symptoms that we were seeing before. It’s a lot of congestion, sometimes sneezing, usually a mild sore throat,’ said Dr. Erick Eiting, vice chair of operations for emergency medicine at Mount Sinai Downtown in New York City.
The sore throat usually arrives first, he said, then congestion.
The Zoe COVID Symptom Study, which collects data on self-reported symptoms in the U.K. through smartphone apps, has documented the same trend. Its findings suggest that a sore throat became more common after the omicron variant grew dominant in late 2021. Loss of smell, by contrast, became less widespread, and the rate of hospital admissions declined compared to summer and fall 2021.
Doctors now describe a clearer, more consistent pattern of symptoms.
‘Just about everyone who I've seen has had really mild symptoms,’ Eiting said of his urgent care patients, adding, ‘The only way that we knew that it was Covid was because we happened to be testing them.’"
THINGS TO PONDER:
They could never really tell the difference between COVID and a cold…
And the PCR tests?
The creator of these tests said that they were not accurate for detecting COVID…
So…
Flawed tests, no way to determine the difference between COVID and cold…
And they are telling you to mask up again, even though studies show that it doesn’t work.
Do you feel like you’re being played?
It’s because you ARE being played.
